Drupa 2008: Gasperini report

After 4 long-awaited years, Drupa 2008, the world’s largest print media show, breaks all records: 1,971 exhibitors and 391,000 visitors coming from 138 different countries. According to visitors statistics (please have a look at the side graph, showing the comparison between Drupa and the other most important exhibitions), Drupa is the main reference for your complete outlook on future developments of printing, publishing, finishing and converting. |
First of all, we would like to “praise” the excellent Messe Düsseldorf trade fair center: this still represents an unreachable goal for many other centers. Big spaces, great organization, parking always available, suitable road connections, efficient public transportation. All that in 2008, just like 30 years ago: to be taken as reference. |

And now let’s talk about us... We would like to underline that the printing market, in general terms, is not looking for increased runs or performance (speed, at the moment, appears unable to go beyond some technical limits): key-words are “print finishing” and “high value-added”! In fact, at the show we have seen new prototypes (coming from the most important offset brands such as Heidelberg, Komori and ManRoland), which are introducing cold foiling, and also some in-line initial attempts of blind emboss. |
We are of course very proud of this new trend: Gasperini has been one of the first European companies which has introduced the “ennobling” & print finishing definitions. We would also like to mention (in addition to a good average competence shown by everybody at the fair) the huge amount of international visitors, coming in large numbers also from India and Asia: we have clearly perceived that the world’s center of mass is shifting towards those areas. We have also noted, on one hand, a reduction of the American presence and, on the other hand, a constant increase of the Russian influence (moreover, for this area we will soon have a local agent). |

With reference to our technologies, security has been the most appreciated factor. Our “on demand” micro-textured foiling dies have been in fact highly esteemed, both for their great visual impact, and also for their high anticounterfeiting deterrent. Moreover, our Italian design has surely played a key role for their success. |
Regarding security, die-stamping/intaglio (the anticounterfeiting techniques par excellence, used for printing banknotes, credit instruments, certificates and protection documents) has made a considerable success too. During the show some important agreements and contracts have been finalized: we would like to mention the one signed with a prestigious company coming from Kazakhstan, and working in the security field. Thanks also to our technologies, they will be able to act in the whole Russian area. We will give you further details in one of next issues. Moreover, as acknowledgement of our pro-active marketing and business action in the western area (and not only), Cronite has extended our agency to all the European countries. |

Last but not least, let’s talk about
thermography: with our high quality and creative samples, this technique has obtained a growing success. This mainly comes from new applications (such as glitters, pearlescent and metallic) that go beyond the traditional fields: the winning idea is to use thermo on some spot areas of the printed sheets (covers, labels, greeting cards, hang tags and so on...). We have also greatly appreciated the professional and friendly presence of Peter Galilee (our excellent engineer) and George O’Connor (Vice President of Sunraise) who have nicely supported us: they have replied to a large number of technical questions asked by our visitors. Similarly to Cronite, also Sunraise has extended, with our great satisfaction, our agency to the whole Europe. This can be rendered, in a sense, as a tribute to our remarkable work done over the past 20 years in the thermography field. Finally, we would like to recall the valuable visits received by our established customers: we cannot obviously mention them all here, but we would anyway like to share with you some souvenir photos. With all of them we have enjoyed a good Espresso Italian coffee... recognized by the most as the best one at the exhibition! |
